Join me in Celebrating Earth Day on Friday, April 22, 2011!
I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet, but I hold myself accountable for our environment and it's sustainability in the future.
If you'd like to be involved, but are perplexed as to what you should do, here are some ideas:
Plant a tree
A great way to restore some eco-sanity to our environment is to plant a tree; a flower, or any other type of shrub will also suffice. Instead of taking from our environment, on Earth Day, make an addition.
Recycle
It's great if you're already in the habit, but for some, recycling can be inconvenient and time consuming. Make the effort, and continue to do so. We can save so many materials, use less energy, and release less toxins into our air by simply recycling our goods!
-Americans throw away enough aluminum every 3 months to rebuild our entire commercial air fleet.
-Americans throw away enough soda bottles annually to circle the earth 4 times.
....put them to use, again!
Go Eco-Friendly Shopping
Let me introduce designer, Susan Woo, who creates eco-friendly fashion. "The future of fashion relies on both the ingenuity of design and the sustainability of the environment," states Woo. There are numerous eco-friendly designers & brands. Do your research, and get to shopping!
On earth day, we must also consider the other beings that inhabit this planet... animals! Check out Beyond Skin to get the latest in footwear; Vegan footwear, that is! No animals were harmed in the making of these shoes! Who knew environmentalists could be this chic!
If you do nothing else on Earth Day, please at least tell someone about it in the hopes that will have the time, and will care enough to make a change that makes a difference!
Other Tips...
1.) Use energy efficient light bulbs. FYI: If your energy service provider is Duke Power, you can get 15 free energy efficient bulbs per year. Call 1-800-943-7585 & press option 1 or visit duke and get yours today!
2.) When planting potted plants or working in your garden, coffee grinds can be use as fertilizer. So, don't toss the grinds when you're done with them in the morning. Use them to fertilize your soil; they can even work as a barrier to keep slugs and snails away from susceptible plants.
3.) Ways to save water: Throw loose scraps in the trash can instead of running the garbage disposal; Use a bowl of water to rinse fresh produce instead of running water from the faucet; replace older shower heads with new low-flow models; men- use an electric shaver instead of letting the water run while you shave.
4.) Car pool with a friend or co-worker to work. A simple tip, but it's easy to forget about how our economic footprints can impact the earth. When you work at a big company like I do, there are bound to be several people that live on your side of town. Make friends & make your way to work, together!
5.) Take your reusable shopping bags to the grocery store or the mall instead of opting for plastic bags!
